Protein: The what, why and hows!

Biology student or not, everyone knows protein is described as the building blocks of life - but what does this mean exactly?

What is Protein?

Made up of amino acids, protein is one of three primary macronutrients (the others being carbohydrate and fat) we consume and derive most of our energy from. While our bodies can produce most of the amino acids we need to stay healthy, there are 9 essential amino acids that we can only get through our diet.

Why is Protein important?

Protein is an important nutrient for everyone, not just athletes and body builders. Now know protein is central to building muscles and maintaining healthy bones and body tissues. But it does much more than that! It essentially (in all senses of the word) participates in all cell processes including your metabolic reactions, immune response, and cell repair. Don't start chugging protein shakes everyday, though! Your body doesn't store proteins in the same way it stores carbohydrates and fats - excess protein that isn't needed will be broken down and stowed away as fat.

So, how much protein do you need?

This depends on a number of factors like age, gender, weight, activity levels and health conditions. The general rule of thumb is to have 50g of protein per day, about 0.8 grams of protein per kg of your body weight; eg. If you weigh at 50kg, you'd need at least 40g of protein per day. However, if you’re physically active, exercising and doing strength training regularly, you may need more protein than the average recommendation.

Is all protein made equal?

Both plants and animals provide good sources of protein. It’s important to be aware, however, that most plant-proteins do not provide all of the essential amino acids. That is one of the reasons why we chose to use non-GMO soy protein isolate in our High Protein Goodness Bowl, as soybeans are a source of complete protein to provide ALL 9 essential amino acids.
